Geography is too often a determinant of economic destiny, and achieving economic stability can be a constant struggle for Tribal communities in remote locations. Many Tribes have not been afforded the opportunity and inclusion necessary to sustain a viable economy. In fact, more than a quarter of Native Americans live in poverty, and the unemployment rate for Native Americans is nearly double the national average. The Foundation and its partners respond to these challenges by focusing on economic development, leading to an increase in opportunities for Tribal businesses and jobs for Tribal members. One example is a unique partnership and licensing agreement with the NFL that allows tribal artisans in New Mexico to produce and sell jewelry with the Washington Redskins logo.
